Transforming the Global Health Ecosystem

Published: 2026-01-19 | Updated: 2026-01-19

A recent report by Muhammad Ali Pate, Donald Kaberuka and Peter Piot puts forward concrete suggestions for advancing global health reform, setting an important precedent: the reform discussions must now centre on specific, action-oriented proposals.

These renowned leaders identify opportunities for substantial consolidation across the global health institutional landscape, calling for fewer functions and clearer mandates. Importantly, they emphasise that simplification is a means, not an end, of global health reform, and that it must contribute to broader objectives of effectiveness, equity, sustainability and alignment with future health needs.

Coalitions of the willing emerge as a particularly promising way forward, provided they are inclusive and actively engage voices from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
